This fascinating portfolio of watercolour sketches is attributed to Major T C Pears who was the eldest son of Sir Thomas Townsend Pears, who was an officer himself in the East India Company. The artist himself was in the Bengal Staff Corps and later became a political agent at Alwar, Rajputana.
Presumably, Major Pears painted the watercolours as he travelled around the Far East during the early years of the 20th century. There is documented evidence of Major Pears and his wife staying at The Kanana Hotel, Nikko in Japan. Their date of arrival at the hotel was 14 April 1902.
The portfolio has been in the hands of a private collector for many years and may not have been on the open market before now. The paintings have been remounted and the majority have their original titles attached.
The portfolio is available as one lot and priced in the region of £4,850-00. There are thirty-two framed and seven unframed watercolours in total.
